About Admiral
Admiral is amazing. He’s a 3-year-old yellow lab and he has been in Service Dog training since he was 8 weeks old. His initial path was to become a guide dog for the blind, but it was discovered along the way that he would be an incredible partner for a Veteran.
The last 13 months of his training were spent on specialized training for PTSD and mobility assistance. Before being partnered with Admiral I spent many years learning about my PTSD and the impact it has on my daily life. I learned that it ebbs and flows based on perceived and unperceived external events.
My primary barrier to a “normal life” in the professional world is how the hypervigilance associated with my PTSD affects me. In my own quest to understand, I was surprised to discover that this hypervigilance can be both a benefit and a detriment depending on the situation.
It is good when I am on a construction site…it helps me not only monitor the site well, but it also keeps me constantly thinking ahead…anticipating what could happen in these conditions five minutes, or an hour from now. It is an enormous detriment in an office setting, especially an open office. The hypervigilance causes me to keep a constant tab open in my mind that monitors movement of others in the space and outside the building, having me believe my safety is at stake. It also imposes a hypersensitive startle reflex which can be incredibly disruptive to others when I get “surprised”… granted sometimes the reaction is hilarious! The unfortunate fact is that I do not always recognize when hypervigilance settles in. The good news is that Admiral has been trained to and he can redirect me when my brain begins to fixate. It is truly remarkable.
I am so fortunate to have him now as my VP and partner in this exciting chapter of my life and career. Thank you for welcoming him to our work!
